M1771 FRENCH ARTILLERY ON FOOT SHORT/BROAD SWORD BY KLINGENTHAL (FRENCH REVOLUTION 1789-1799)

PRICE: 500.00 EURO

Available

REF 2024/SW1005

DESCRIPTION

Designed to resemble the Roman Gladius, the blade has the "B" under the crown inspection mark of Francois Bisch, a controller at the French arsenal at Klingenthal (France). The second stamp, "R," on the blade, belongs to Louis Antoine Gau de Vaumarin, who operated at the arsenal from 1765 until 1784. The combination of the two stamps concludes that the blade was made around 1783-1784, just before the French Revolution (1789-1799). The M1775 later replaced the model with two grooves in the blade. The scabbard is not original to the piece and dates from around the turn of the 20th century, so it is priced accordingly.

These swords were used from the French Revolution until 1830 when they became out of fashion. The French Royal Corps of Artillery was divided into seven permanent regiments around 1789 and stationed at La Fère, Metz, Besançon, Grenoble, Strasbourg, Auxonne, Toul, and the Colonies.

A highly underrated item, considering its essential history! An engraved officer exampled recently sold for 2.000 euros.
